The 2025 SEMA Show takes place in Las Vegas this week (Nov 4-7), and it is the most anticipated automotive event of the year. It hosts some of the wildest builds, showcasing all the innovation in the aftermarket industry. Automakers use the event to showcase their own concepts, prototypes, and restomods.

A SEMA Build That Looks Factory-Original

Toyota will be revealing a cool Land Cruiser restomod at this year’s event. The FJ60-generation Land Cruiser might look quite ordinary, and unlike many SEMA builds, it was designed to appear factory-original. But look closer and you’ll find serious engineering. Toyota Turbo Trail Cruiser is a build carried out by Toyota's own Motorsports Garage engineers.

Under the vintage hood sits a modern 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged i-FORCE Max engine from the current Tundra. The engine makes 389 HP and 479 lb-ft of torque, and Toyota engineers mated the unit to the original 5-speed manual gearbox of the FJ60. The swap was made possible with a custom bellhousing, a modified oil pan, and a custom exhaust system that also makes the modern V6 sing louder.

Touchscreen…and Crank Windows?

The exterior is finished in a reproduction of Toyota’s period-correct silver. The body sits higher than stock thanks to a subtle but effective 1.5-inch lift kit and a set of 35” off-road tires wrapped around polished wheels.

The interior features an upgraded JBL audio system, a large touchscreen head unit for all modern infotainment needs, and crank windows!

Keeping the Classics Alive

While the components seem like opposites, such as an almost 40-year-old manual gearbox and a modern i-FORCE V6, or a touchscreen head unit with manual windows, the outcome is terrific.

The whole package highlights Toyota’s drive to preserve the classic vehicles alive in one way or another. The build also highlights how internal combustion engines remain vital in the brand’s strategy. These facts restore our faith as enthusiasts!
